Missouri Legislature advances Nullification law

From the Huffington Post:

“The Republican-controlled Missouri House of Representatives advanced legislation Wednesday that would make it a felony to enforce any federal gun-control laws.

The House voted 117-43 to approve legislation that would prohibit the enforcement of all federal gun laws enacted after Jan. 1, 2013, either by Congress or through an executive order by President Barack Obama. The sponsor said the goal is to enforce Missouri residents’ Second Amendment rights. Opponents said it is unconstitutional.

“The Second Amendment says we have the right to keep and bear arms,” state Rep. Casey Guernsey (R-Bethany), the bill sponsor, told The Huffington Post. “Whenever the federal government or President Obama takes any measure on gun control, they are taking that right away.”

Under the terms of the bill, any federal agent who attempts to enforce a federal gun law in the state would face a class D felony, which could carry a jail sentence.

Guernsey, who is trying to ban drones as well, said his main concern is making sure the gun policies Obama is pushing do not have any impact on Missouri. The legislation would withstand any constitutional challenges because, he said, the state’s 10th Amendment gives the Legislature the right to overrule challenges to the Constitution by federal officials.

Guernsey did not include all federal gun laws since he believes those enacted prior to 2013 can work, he said.

The bill received support from several Democrats, but opponents are arguing that it is unnecessary and would do nothing more than give money to trial attorneys in an attempt to overturn the law.

“This is Missouri’s answer to mass shootings and gun violence around the country, just keep blaming the government,” state Rep. Stacey Newman (D-St. Louis) told HuffPost. “They want to make it easier to have a gun. It makes Missouri look so backwards by saying this is our answer. It says our guns mean more to us than saving lives.”

Leave it to a Democrat to say something this ignorant. What Rep. Stacey Newman…from St. Louis doesn’t realize is that more guns do save lives.

Why is it that Liberal / Progressives believe that by simply passing a law criminals are going to obey it? Do they not realize that the root word of criminal is “crime” , hence  criminals will not obey gun laws.  More law-abiding gun owners stop crime because the criminal doesn’t know if their next victim is going to be armed or not.

Case in point, NPR St. Louis reported in an article posted on Jan. 22, 2013 :

“When the 2012 crime statistics were reported last week, there was good news in both St. Louis City and the portion of St. Louis County patrolled by St. Louis County Police.

In St. Louis City, crime fell from 2011 to an overall per capita rate that is lower than in 1970.  The report showed a continuing decline in serious violent crime, although the number of homicides was the same as in 2011.”

Just what did NPR credit with the drop in violent crime in St. Louis County?

“Professor Rosenfeld described the city police department’s new “hot spot” strategy that places more officers in areas where crime is more rampant and during hours when the most crime is committed.    He also discussed the importance of citizen involvement.”

I’m sure the police department’s new “hot spot” strategy helped but I think there is a little more to this “citizen involvement” thing that NPR and Professor Rosenfeld aren’t’ telling us.

A report published on April 17, 2013 by the River Front Times gives some interesting incite to why crime just might be falling in the St. Louis , Missouri area:

“The number of people seeking concealed-carry permits has jumped in St. Louis county — by a lot.

In St. Louis and across Missouri there’s been a lot of talk about concealed-carry permit holders in recent weeks. Statewide, a debate has erupted about the privacy of concealed-carry applicants, and in St. Louis county, a recent investigation into an allegedly fraudulent gun instructor has also sparked some controversy.

In our reporting, Daily RFT has stumbled upon some interesting stats. In St. Louis county, officials this year are processing an average of 700 concealed-carry permit applications a month. Seven years ago, the monthly average was around 90.

What’s the cause of this huge spike?

It can be difficult to speculate, though when there is talk of gun control and new gun laws across the country, there can be increases in gun sales, permit applications, trainings and more.

What’s interesting about the county data is that there has been a rapid increase in recent months — and a gradual rise over the last half-decade.”

The River Front Times also reports that there has been an average of 700 new conceal carry permit applications a month for 2013 and at this pace the applications for concealed carry permits will set a record. Click Here to read the rest of the RFT’s report.

Study after study shows that where there are more legal gun owners there is less crime but the Liberal / Progressive cradle to grave communist don’t want you to know this. They want you to give up your firearms and just trust the government to protect you. Of course without any firearms who is to stop the government, or any run of the mill street thug from stealing your life, livelihood, personal property or right to speak freely about this or any other subject? -Editor
