What happened to the Ozark’s Irish Colony?

irish_wilderness“The Irish Wilderness” was a colony founded by Irish Catholic immigrants in the Ozarks of Southeast , Missouri.  Some blamed the Confederates for its destruction but a careful examination of historical archives tells a far different story. According to the January 18, 1878 edition of the Doniphan Prospect,  the settlers of the Irish Wilderness tried to stay neutral in the war and provided shelter for weary soldiers of the Union and Confederate alike but it was destroyed by “So -called Union troops” who “laid waste the property of the colonists of the “Wilderness”-upon the ground of being Rebel sympathizers”
