Both Democrats AND Republicans fight freedom initiative in California

california_splitReuters is reporting that supporters of a plan to divide California into six separate states , just received some very big support. According to the news agency:

“San Francisco (Reuters) – A long-shot effort to break California into six separate states got a boost on Monday, when the billionaire venture capitalist behind the proposal said he had gathered enough signatures to place it on the ballot in two years.

Timothy Draper, a founder of a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm that has invested in Twitter, Skype and Tesla, among other companies, has been agitating for months for a ballot initiative to chop the most populous U.S. state into smaller entities.

“It’s important because it will help us create a more responsive, more innovative and more local government, and that ultimately will end up being better for all of Californians,” said Roger Salazar, a spokesman for the campaign. “The idea … is to create six states with responsive local governments – states that are more representative and accountable to their constituents.”

It sounds like a good plan, a sound plan, a plan to give more Californians more representation and more choice over their resources. So who would be opposed to it?

Officials from both the Democrat AND Republican camps are fighting the measure. Even as California goes  further in debt and its economy continues to crash they proclaim the effort is harmful and will hurt an improving California recovery. Again quoting Reuters:

“the plan has raised bipartisan hackles across the state, and opponents say it stands little chance of gaining voter approval. If it does win the support of voters, it must still be passed by Congress, which opponents say is also unlikely.

“This is a colossal and divisive waste of time, energy, and money that will hurt the California brand,” said Steven Maviglio, a Democratic political strategist who has formed the group OneCalifornia with GOP strategist Joe Rodota to fight Draper’s plan. “It has zero chance of passage. But what it does is scare investment away… at a time when the Governor is leading us to an economic comeback.”

Yes it has zero chance of passing. I guess that’s why the Democrats and Republicans have come together to form “One California” huh?

It is incredible that the same people who like to use words like “Freedom” and “Liberty” during fundraising campaigns are the first ones to fight it when citizens try to exorcize these rights.  To these people “secession” is a dirty word.

It reminds me of a scene in the movie “The Aviator“.  The scene is when Howard Hughes meets with Senator Brewster to discuss a bill that would make Pan-American airlines the only airline in America because “one airline can do it better”

Of course Senator Brewster was on the payroll of Pan-Am’s Juan Tripp. Makes you wonder whose payroll Maviglio (the Democrat) and Rodota (the Republican) are on.
